The government says that unemployment is around 9.5%, but is that true.

The real unemployment number is actually around 20%, maybe more. There are many people who are either unemployed or underemployed who have not been able to find the kind of job that actually pays enough to be a decent living for them or their families.

Many Americans are trying to find better, more secure alternatives to working for soulless corporations who care for nothing except executive compensation and stock prices.

For many older workers their only reasonable alternative is to “make their own job“. That phrase is a direct quote from our local employment office. They recommend this to workers over 40 every day. They don’t have any other options to offer. They should change the name on the sign outside to “The Unemployment Office”!

Many workers who are lucky enough to have skills they can translate to other careers are starting businesses. Our personal income went from 6 figures to poverty level when my husband lost his corporate JOB. We have reinvented ourselves as Internet marketers in partnership with other people who are self employed to help them (and us) find a customer base through the Net. We are not of an age when many people would expect us to hit page 1 on search engines, but we do it anyway with stellar computer skills, writing skills and determination.

It has not been easy but we’re starting to see some nice results, in spite of all the obstacles we have encountered. The most difficulty we have had has been from an uncaring government that is not helpful to new businesses. Large businesses have also put obstacles in our way but we persevered anyway.

Many laid off Americans are taking 401Ks and savings and buying commercial enterprises, businesses that they perceive to be a better and less risky way for them and their families to survive.

We have friends who are driving trucks, running housekeeping businesses, doing home remodeling and maintenance, doing yard work and landscaping, collecting and selling stuff second hand, consulting, and running various retail businesses.

We have one friend who is a business broker who is going great guns, because many people have stopped looking for a job and are buying one instead.

Additionally many people who are buying commercial property are getting a great investment in real estate as well as a new job.

It’s all happening because people can’t find good jobs regardless of whether they have business majors and math educations and lots of experience that Corporate America claims they can’t find in workers.

The possibilities for entrepreneurship cross the entire business spectrum from service and construction, to professional services, to retail.

Other opportunities are possibilities, too. Manufacturing virtually died in the US 10 to 15 years ago. But now foreign manufacturers are being pressured by higher worker costs and shipping costs. It could give Americans businesses opportunities that did not exist a few years ago, even in manufacturing.

So if you’re still looking for that “secure” job, you might want to rethink your search and start looking for ways to create your own job. It will be the closest thing you will get to job security.

GM Landfills Go Green to the Extreme Major US Auto Manufacturer Creates a Zero Waste Movement As the push to be environmentally conscious increases, many of us try to practice what we preach – reduce-reuse-recycle. But according to the Environmental Protection Agency, 55 percent of everyday garbage and trash still ends up in giant landfills across the US Now, a new extreme form of “going green,” called “landfill free,” is changing the landscape. Companies like Anheuser-Busch, Subaru and General Motors have committed themselves to a landfill free manufacturing process – meaning all the materials generated as a result of regular production operations are either recycled or reused in some way. Today, twelve of GM’s US plants and 43 worldwide have achieved landfill free status. At these plants, everything from aluminum chips to plastic trays to used gloves are recycled and reused – eliminating nearly 8000 tons of waste a year. The environmental benefits of just one of these plants’ waste recycling efforts include the prevention of over 44000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions being emitted into the atmosphere and the preservation of over 3000 mature trees annually.
